Find out more information about the recommended Chevy Tahoe oil type with our guide, whether you love performing oil changes on your own or bringing your SUV into our service center.

What Is the Correct Chevy Tahoe Oil Type?

General Motors (GM), Chevy’s manufacturer, recommends full synthetic SAE 0W-20 ACDelco dexos1 as the Chevy Tahoe oil type for the 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 gasoline engines. If your Chevy Tahoe has the 3.0L Duramax Turbodiesel engine, the manufacturer recommends SAE 0W-20 dexosD diesel engine oil because diesel engines are configured differently than gasoline engines. The Chevy Tahoe’s oil capacity comes in at 8 quarts due to its larger engines compared to cars.

Chevy Tahoe Oil Type: Synthetic vs. Conventional

Many drivers from Early and Eastland ask us about the differences between conventional and full synthetic oils for their Chevy Tahoe. That’s because conventional oil is less expensive than full synthetic when you purchase supplies for an oil change. However, that might not be the best choice since full synthetic oil makes your engine last longer.

Conventional oil changes could cost between $30 to $50 less than full synthetic ones at a dealership. It depends on where you get your oil change and if there are any service specials. But you’ll save money in the long run with full synthetic oil for several reasons.

Synthetic Oil Benefits

Full synthetic oil gives your Chevy Tahoe several benefits.

  • Specially formulated
  • Lasts longer
  • Provides better engine protection
  • Special additives
  • More cleansers
  • Specialize anti-oxidizers
  • Keeps the engine in better shape
  • Prevents expensive repairs later
  • Costs less over time

If you want to take the best care of your Chevy Tahoe and have it last longer, full synthetic oil is the recommended choice from the manufacturer and our service team.

Going with full synthetic costs less over time because you have fewer oil changes. For instance, if a full synthetic oil change costs $95 while a conventional oil change is $65, you’ll save $35 because you’ll need two conventional oil changes for just one synthetic oil change. These savings add up over time. Your owner’s manual or Chevy Tahoe oil life monitor system will tell you when it’s time for an oil change.

What Happens If I Don’t Change My Chevy Tahoe Oil?

Chevy Tahoe oil lubricates the pistons as they move rapidly up and down. The pistons moving is how your SUV moves forward. If you don’t change the oil regularly, the engine’s internal components will eventually overheat and warp. Warped pistons will make your Tahoe’s engine completely useless and you’ll need a new engine.

To keep expensive breakdowns from happening, we recommend a full synthetic oil change once or twice a year, or around every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, near Stephenville. You’ll need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and three to four times a year with conventional oil.
