How to Fix Car Scratches

While major repairs to your finish are best left to the professionals, minor car scratch repair can often be performed at home. Ranging from temporary solutions to more long-term fixes, take a look at some methods of how to fix car scratches at home:

  • Candle Wax – A temporary but effective fix, you can clean the scratch and simply rub it with a candle to seal it until you get to a service center.
  • Super Glue – What if you don’t have a candle on hand? Superglue will also seal a scratch and help blend the damage as a short-term solution.
  • Paint Polish or Rubbing Compound – Polishing the scratch offers a more seamless look. Start with light polish and your least abrasive foam pad, and work your way up to higher-grit polishes and compounds
  • Wet Sandpaper – If polishing doesn’t work, give wet sanding a try. Clean the area and rub the scratch with 2000-grit wet sandpaper. Once the scratch disappears, apply a rubbing compound. Continue to use finer and finer polishes, and then finish with a wax or paint sealant for extra protection.
  • Touch-Up Paint: Visit any auto parts store to pick up a tube of touch-up paint. Apply it to the scratch according to directions, and you’ll get a perfect paint match in seconds.

How to Fix Car Dents

Learning how to get a dent out of a car can take a little more elbow grease than a simple car scratch repair. However, there are still plenty of methods to try at home for small and medium dents:

  • Plunger – Place a plunger over the dent to pop the panel back into place. You can use either a household plunger or a specialized car dent plunger from an auto store.
  • Hammer or Mallet – Working on the opposite side of the dent, you can use a hammer or mallet to gently tap the dent back into place. Protect the paint with a towel and work carefully.
  • Dent Puller – If you have more auto repair experience, you can use a dent puller to level out the panel. This is a multi-step process where you drill a hole through the dent, lace a wire through, and pull the dent back to surface level. Finish by filling the hole and painting the surface.
