When you think of Buick, you probably don't think of iconic muscle cars. But, the rare Buick Grand National debuted in the 80s with a fuel-injected, turbocharged engine that producrf 200 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque--powerful enough to outrun the Chevy Camaro and even some Corvettes at the time. Buick only produced the Grand National from 1982 to 1987 in small numbers, but it left quite the impression on car lovers and drivers across the board.
New York filmmaker Andrew Filippone Jr. first laid eyes on the Buick Grand National when he was just 16. But it made enough of an impression on him, that years later, when he wanted to make a documentary "about class and the stratifications of classes,"1 he thought of the Buick Grand National. Filippone admits that he's not even really a car guy, but "Buick's fire-breather" seemed to be a good fit for the theme he was going for. He says that the Grand National was "the triumph of the misfit."2After three years of hard work, the film, titled Black Air: The Buick Grand National Documentary will make its debut in 2012. The 60-minute film chronicles the emergence, performance and triumph of the iconic car. Interviewees call the Grand National the "misfit," "the uninvited guest," "the mold breaker?a car with a Buick coat on but, inside its soul was wanting to have fun and burn rubber and go fast."3 Get a sneak peak by watching the trailer at http://vimeo.com/27452222.
